Match the set to the age on the box first, then the child's interests. DUPLO for toddlers, Classic and Friends for 4–6, NINJAGO, City and Star Wars for 6–9, Speed Champions, Harry Potter and Technic for 9–12, and Architecture or bigger builds for teens.
Start with the age on the box
Every LEGO box shows an age, like 4+, 6+ or 9+. It's a guide to how hard the build is, not just safety. Buy at or slightly above the child's age, then choose a theme they already love: a Spider-Man fan will happily build a harder set than a child who isn't into the subject.
Ages 1½ to 3: DUPLO
DUPLO bricks are big enough for small hands and too large to swallow. A DUPLO Brick Box (AED 119) is the best first LEGO there is: open-ended, sturdy, and it lasts for years. For superhero fans, try DUPLO Spidey-Rex vs. Green Goblin (AED 85).
Ages 4 to 6: first real LEGO
- LEGO Classic Bricks and Houses, AED 149: a big box of bricks with ideas to build houses, a street and more. Great for creativity.
- Classic Magical Transparent Box, AED 85: clear bricks and a storage box, a lovely small gift.
- Disney Encanto: Antonio's Magical Door, AED 94, for fans of the film.
Ages 6 to 9: their first themes
This is when children pick their favourite worlds: ninjas, superheroes, Star Wars, City.
- NINJAGO: dragons, mechs and vehicles, like Lloyd's Green Forest Dragon (AED 62) or the Jungle Raider (AED 99).
- Marvel: the Hulk Mech Armor (AED 99) and Black Panther Mech (AED 89) are quick, sturdy and very playable.
- Star Wars: the Stormtrooper Mech (AED 109) or a Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack (AED 129).
- Minifigures: blind packs from AED 35. Kids love collecting the series.
Ages 9 to 12: bigger builds
- Speed Champions: real cars at minifigure scale, from AED 109. F1 fans love the McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull cars.
- Harry Potter: the Hogwarts Whomping Willow (AED 375) is a big, playable set full of film moments.
- Technic: the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 (AED 299) is a great first Technic car.
- Creator 3in1: the Sunken Treasure Mission (AED 215) builds three different models from one box.
- BrickHeadz: collectible character figures from AED 99.
Teens: display pieces and challenges
- LEGO Architecture Dubai, AED 599: the Dubai skyline, Burj Khalifa included. A brilliant gift for anyone who calls the UAE home, and great for National Day.
- Harry Potter Hogwarts Astronomy Tower, AED 599, for serious fans.
- LEGO Ideas Central Perk, AED 799: the café from Friends, rated 16+.
